Shoveling
I spent the majority of today shoveling. Most people dread shoveling, the inevitable back pain and the general inconvenience of it. For some reason I have always liked it. I think its because I can think when I shovel, even more importantly I can think uninterrupted. While I was shoveling I overheard two women across the street discussing the inauguration. They were both non-stop praising Barack Obama and retelling how they were crying when he got elected. At the time I was a little annoyed, I thought he is just another politician, he will do some good but probably some evil too. But the more I thought about it the more I realized I have no idea what racism was like in this country. These women were much older and they clearly had lived through some of America's worst time, I on the other hand had no idea. But the more I think about the more I am amazed that America elected an African American into the presidency. To be honest I thought it would probably never happen, I thought dumb red-neck America would ensure that we never had a minority in office. I gained some faith in America today because I shoveled.
